Building a national digital infrastructure for preserving, restoring and giving access to Kazakhstan’s historic film heritage.
The National Digital Film Collection was developed at the Kazakh Research Institute of Culture under Andrey Khazbulatov. The project combined digitisation and restoration of film materials, systematisation of archival data and online access to Kazakhstan’s film heritage. In 2017 the system was registered as an object of intellectual property.
Phase 1
The project covered the full technological cycle: scanning historic film stock, digital processing and image restoration, producing digital copies and preparing the materials for storage.

Phase 2
Films were combined with descriptions, metadata and archival information, forming a systematic digital resource for preserving, researching and using film heritage.

Phase 3
The web resource filmofond.kz was created for the collection, giving access to digital materials and information about the film heritage. The project joined heritage preservation with modern technologies of digital access.
